Network and Client/Server
Has the status of Token Ring support for HP SNAplus changed
recently?
Yes, Token Ring may not be supported with the second release
of HP SNAplus scheduled for on March 1 (DART 9). A Token
Ring patch will be available from the National Response
Center by April 1.
Does my HP MPE/iX system with an unlimited user license
require an unlimited license for networking products?
Usually the network product user license must align with the
HP MPE system license. HP 3000 Series
922/922RX/925/932/935/948/958 with unlimited user license
can be configured with a 64-user license for networking
products. There are also some licensing promotions available
for Series 9X7 systems.
When will HP OpenView Network Manager (NNM) 3.1 be supported
on HP-UX 9.0?
HP OpenView NNM 3.1 is supported on HP-UX 9.0, but network
tracing and logging and the Ingres database option will not
work. The problems will be fixed on Release 3.3 scheduled
for May.
HP 9000 Series 800 and HP 1000
What are the new ordering structures for HP OmniBack,
OmniBack/Turbo, and OpenSpool?
Refer to "HP OmniBack, OmniBack/Turbo, and OpenSpool User-
Based Licensing" in the December 1, 1992, Computer News.
When will the IBM 3480 compatible tape drive from Storage
Tek be supported on Series 800 multiuser systems?
The capability is planned for spring 1993. Silo products are
planned for support in late 1993.
Why is the 128-MB memory board so expensive?
This high-density memory uses 64-Kb DRAMs, which are new
and costly to manufacture.
900 Series HP 3000 and Terminals
How do you add the new 1- and 2-GB disk drives to current
systems?
Order P/N A2245A option 001 to put the 1-GB disk in the SPU;
P/N A2246A option 002 for the 2-GB disk.
Define the new licensing levels on HP MPE.
For Series 920/922LX/925LX align user level with HP MPE/iX
license. For Series 925/935/922/922RX purchase the 64-user
license for unlimited. For Series 932/948/958 it is HP
MPE/iX-licensed systems. For Series 950/955/960 purchase the
160-user license for unlimited HP MPE/iX-licensed systems.
For Series 980/990 systems purchase a user license that
aligns with the HP MPE license.
WSG/Workstation
What is the part number for the new 32-MB RAM module for HP
Apollo 9000 Model 715/725?
It is P/N A2829A, which also works in Model 745/747i.
Where do we call for information on HP-UX 9.X workstation
upgrades?
In Asia Pacific call your local office or response center;
in
the U.S., 800-438-5081; in Europe, 31-79-685-155.

HP-UX Application Release Program
HP-UX Application Release Program
Contact: Debbie Jeong, 415 or Telnet 691-5268
HP Delivery Application Release Train (DART) is a time-
driven release vehicle that delivers new and updated HP-UX
applications (ISUs) for HP 9000 Series 300/800 and HP Apollo
9000 Series 400/700 systems. DART is not a formal release
name; it is to be used only within HP. The preferred terms
are HP-UX applications or application releases.
HP-UX application releases are distributed approximately
every eight weeks to provide timely, predictable, and
comprehensive software updates. HP-UX application product
updates can include bundled products, independent of other
releases, synchronous on all platforms. HP-UX application
releases are available on all supported media for the given
DART. Most HP application divisions are participating in the
program. The application release process serves the field,
update customers, and customers placing new orders.
Features
Reliable 8-Week Release Interval
8.X- and 9.0-Based
HP-UX Applications (ISU Products)
Possible Accommodation of Non-ISU Products
Original Shipment Business/Update Shipment Business
Shipped by Software Replication/Distribution operation
(SRDO)/Software Replication and Distribution Europe/Software
Technology Division Europe/Support Materials
Organization/Direct Marketing Organization
Standard Process
Compact Disc Media Required, All Media Types Supported
(except 8.X-Based Series 800 Products)
Beginning with the February HP-UX application release all
internal subscription customers, including the field and
response centers, will receive updates on CD. The exception
will be Series 800, 8.X-based applications, which will be
delivered on digital data storage (DDS). Requests for other
media types will be managed through a pull process to be
dictated by SRDO.
Internal subscriptions will receive application CDs. Core
CDs will be pushed only when updated core products are
contained on the CD (the DART process was not designed to
release core products; this is done on an exception basis
only). The CDs are unencrypted and contain all available HP-
UX products on CD, including previously released products.
Each new delivery of a CD set is cumulative and contains the
latest new and updated products on the application disc. All
other media (DDS, magnetic tape, cartridge tape) are
customized with only the new or updated products on a given
application release.
Customers who have CD support are pushed DART releases. The
customer receives only a CD that has been updated for a
particular DART and a new corresponding code word. This is
the case even if the customer's set of products has not
changed from the last DART. Each new CD delivery is
cumulative and contains the latest new and updated products
for that particular CD.
A customer on CD support needs a code word to unlock an
updated CD. A code word is required to update all of the
secured software products from the core operating system
(OS) disc and applications disc. There is one unique code
word for the core OS disc and one for the applications disc.
If the number of applications discs increases to two, there
will be a unique code word for each disc.
Code words are provided on the CD-ROM certificate entitled
"Code Word to Install Software" included with each shipment.
A code word is not required to access the files on the
install disc. New code words will unlock only those products
on the CD that are covered under the customer's HP software
support agreement.
Non-CD support customers get update shipments only when one
or more of their particular products have been updated via
the HP-UX application release process. Customers then
receive the set of products they are entitled to, customized
on that particular media type. Non-CD support customers
receive only the updated products, not all the products like
CD support customers.

"Sun-Oracle Connection" Correction
"Sun-Oracle Connection" Correction
The January article contained a misleading statement. This
is a clarification.
Sun Microsystems announced that Oracle Corporation had
chosen Sun workstations for its future development platform.
From Sun's statements it could be inferred that Sun users
would have earlier access and better performance of Oracle
products than other hardware vendors. In fact Oracle will
continue to use systems from several different hardware
vendors, including HP, for development, internal
testing/usage, and porting environments.
For More Information
Refer to "Sun-Oracle Connection" in the January Computer
News; access the GSY Hotline subject ORCLSUN.

HP PC ARPA/NS Transition Update
HP PC ARPA/NS Transition Update
Contact: Network Sales Center; 408 or Telnet 447-4444
This is an update on changes in the host access environment,
HP's plans to better focus resources, and the corresponding
changes to the HP PC ARPA/NS product line.
HP will continue to sell and support current HP PC ARPA and
Network Services, P/N J2246A, until a number of comparable
solutions are available. P/N J2246A was the last HP ARPA/NS
release. HP will give notice before the product is
discontinued. HP has been working closely with several HP
Channel Partners to ensure equivalent functionality and
establish upgrade programs to aid in the transition from HP
ARPA/NS to Channel Partner products.
Vendors
Microsoft--offers ARPA connectivity in HP LAN Manager
environment but has not announced an upgrade plan; plans to
support WINSOCK
NetManage--has upgrade plan; offers ARPA connectivity in HP
LAN Manager and NetWare environments; currently offers
WINSOCK support
Novell--has upgrade plan; offers ARPA connectivity in
NetWare environments; plans to support WINSOCK
SPRY--has upgrade plan; offers ARPA connectivity in HP LAN
Manager and NetWare environments; considering NS software
support
Tymlabs--considering HP NS/VT functionality support; working
on establishing Business Sessions compatibility with WRQ
protocols
Walker, Richer, and Quinn (WRQ)--has upgrade plan; offers
ARPA connectivity and has NS/VT connectivity to HP 3000
systems and NetIPC application support in HP LAN Manager and
NetWare environments; supports HP WSOCKETS API; plans to
support WINSOCK
Customers who currently use HP NS/VT can follow a migration
path to the WRQ product. The product works with the WRQ
Reflections terminal emulator product. WRQ also offers an
upgrade program for HP AdvanceLink terminal emulators to
Reflections. At this time only WRQ supports applications
that are written to the NetIPC API of NS. WRQ is currently
the only Channel Partner that offers functionality
equivalent to DSCOPY.
Field networking and business consultants can obtain Channel
Partner product and upgrade offering literature from
Information Networks Division. Sales reps should start
working with customers and Channel Partner contacts to
select the most suitable Channel Partner solutions.

HP OpenSpool and SharedPrint/UX Positioning
HP OpenSpool and SharedPrint/UX Positioning
For the Americas and Europe Only
Contact: David Moreno, 508 or Telnet 436-5039
HP OpenSpool, P/N B1900B, and HP SharedPrint/UX, P/Ns B2154A
(for HP Apollo 9000 Series 700) and B2159A (for HP 9000
Series 800), are complementary products that provide
comprehensive printing solutions to HP customers. HP
SharedPrint functionality is available in the HP
SharedPrint/UX standalone product or HP OpenSpool
SharedPrint, P/N B1900B integrated option 222 (with media
and documentation kit, P/N B1917B).
HP SharedPrint provides a print path from various file
formats to hard-copy devices and simultaneously frees users
from determining which filters (translators) to invoke. This
is achieved through a graphical user interface that is
tightly integrated into the VUE environment using an
OSF/Motif user interface. HP SharedPrint also facilitates
communication with printers through the use of NCS/RPC. In
its basic form HP SharedPrint/UX uses the lp spooler that
comes with HP-UX.
HP SharedPrint is not a printing management solution. It
does not have the robustness to manage hard-copy devices in
a large network. HP SharedPrint also lacks the security
features, print queue management utilities, and single point
administration of hard-copy devices across the network. HP
OpenSpool is the recommended solution for this functionality
level.
Selling HP OpenSpool SharedPrint, OpenSpool, and
SharedPrint/UX
For customers who need printing solutions that have all of
what HP has to offer in terms of print management resources
and printing flexibility, sell HP OpenSpool SharedPrint.
With this solution customers get the benefits of the
traditional HP OpenSpool product plus the series of filters
that permit the printing of PostScript files to non-
PostScript devices. This includes large format devices; CGM
files to HP-GL/2 devices; and Image files (TIFF including
Group III/IV, LZW compression, JPEG compression) X-window
purges, X bitmaps, Starbase, GIF, and JFIF bitmaps to PCL,
PostScript, and RTL devices.
For customers in traditional printing environments who need
robust print management solutions but have no need for the
filters, continue to sell HP OpenSpool. For workstation
customers who find lp spooling services adequate but need
the filters, sell HP SharedPrint/UX as a basic, cost-
effective solution.

HP is continually enhancing HP Transact to meet growing
customer needs. This release and succeeding releases will
contain key enhancements and defect fixes. The features and
fixes are part of the plan to make HP Transact an
exceptional programming language for HP MPE platforms.
Features and Benefits
This release focuses on defect fixes that were committed to

August 1991 Interex. Two high-priority enhancements are
included in this release.
DATE/C Option to the LIST Verb--allows HP Transact

HP Transact I/O verbs. The fully integrated HP TurboIMAGE
and TPI packages are available on HP MPE/iX Release 4.0.
Less integrated TPI packages are available for other HP
MPE/iX and MPE V operating systems. Contact the Channel
Partner indexing vendors for software that is compatible
with your HP MPE/iX or MPE V version.

New field upgrade products are available for HP 3000 Series
9X7 systems. With the December 1, 1992, introduction of HP
3000 Series 9X7RX systems and fundamental shift in software
to user-based pricing, the field upgrade structure has been
modified to reflect these changes. Menus similar to those
used for system orders have been created to handle the major
components needed for field upgrades. The menus are designed
for current and former Series 9X7 systems and include the
chassis, processor, license to use for FOS and the
appropriate database, and floating point coprocessor.
The products accommodate six upgrade types: processor board
upgrades to increase system performance; chassis upgrades to
increase the number of available I/O slots; user license
upgrades to allow more users to access the system; memory
upgrades; addition of floating point coprocessors; and
server to system upgrades.
The following order examples walk you through the new
product structure. For detailed ordering information refer
to pages 17 and 25 of the January 1993 price guide addendum.
Order Example One
Customer has Series 917LX with an 8-user license for HP

HP vice president Wim Roelandts was misquoted in "HP's MPE
still a contender" on page 67 of the November 2, 1992,
ComputerWorld. The reprint is Wim's letter to the editor in
response to the errors. While the article correctly stated
that HP's objective is to keep HP 3000 customers satisfied,
it failed to note HP's plans for winning new HP 3000
business in areas where IBM AS/400 is currently winning,
particularly in the mainframe alternative area.
For More Information
A reprint of an article Wim authored on this subject in mid-
1992: "MPE Is Alive and Well," P/N 5091-5632E, is available

HP MPE/iX System Requirements for HP Transact Development
HP MPE/iX System Requirements for HP Transact Development
Contact: Harry Uy, 916 or Telnet 785-4314
Some customers migrating from HP Transact/V to native mode
Transact/iX may experience longer compile times for large HP
Transact applications. There are three possible reasons for
the reduced performance.
Differences between the HP Transact/V Interpreter and
Transact/iX Compiler--The HP Transact/V compiler generates
intermediate code that is then interpreted at run time. This
results in faster compile time but slower run time. The HP
Transact/iX compiler generates an object module that is
executed at run time. The HP Transact/iX compiler may take
longer; the benefit is the increased run-time speed, which
is important because when the development is complete run-
time users realize the increased performance.
Parameters in PROC Calls Are Checked in HP Transact/iX--HP
Transact/iX does additional parameter checking that is not
performed in Transact/V. The parameters passed in PROC calls
in HP Transact/iX are compared with the definitions in the
SYSINTR file. If the parameter types do not match or the
number of parameters passed is incorrect, the developer is
warned. This is an added feature in HP Transact/iX that
increases compile time.
Insufficient System Memory--The first two causes of
increased compile time are functions of the HP Transact/iX
compiler and users cannot change the result. Memory is
something users can control and should be considered at the
time of system installation. The standard memory
configuration for high-end systems is sufficient for most
applications. Low-end systems with 16-48 MB of standard
memory are too small for development of large applications.
Compile time is significantly increased when a system has 48
MB of memory or less. When memory is increased to 56 MB a
significant performance improvement is realized. Another
smaller improvement is realized when memory is increased to
64 MB. These memory constraints are most noticeable with
very large applications--applications that include many
variables or very large variables.
When configuring an HP MPE/iX system upgrade for HP Transact
development, the size of the applications being developed
and maintained needs to be considered. Sixty-four megabytes
of memory is recommended for very large applications. Less
than 56 MB of memory can cause long compile times for large
applications.
Example
The very large HP Transact/iX program on an HP 3000 MPE/iX
Series 935 used in the example had more that 10,000 lines of
HP Transact code split into four segments. This particular
example cannot be compiled on HP Transact/V because it runs
out of stack space.

Due to the high U.S. local currency price of the HP
Documentation for System Dictionary/XL manual set, P/N
36371A, the set was discontinued and unbundled to six
individual manuals effective February 1. This benefits
customers because the combined price of the individual
manuals is less expensive than the price of the set, manuals
can be ordered individually, and it is easier to order
through Support Materials Organization (SMO) and Parts
Center Europe (PCE).

HP 9000 and ADABAS Achieve Record TPC-A Result
HP 9000 and ADABAS Achieve Record TPC-A Result
Contact: Sales Response Center, 408 or Telnet 447-4444
With the introduction of the new HP 9000 Series 800 systems,
HP and Software AG announced that Model I50 running ADABAS
Version 2.1 achieved 303.1 tpsA at $5,913/tpsA. The result
is unparalleled in several ways. It is currently the
industry's largest uniprocessor TPC-A result. It is the best
price/performance result ever announced; no other vendor has
broken the $7,000/tpsA barrier. It is the first Software AG
TPC-A result; HP is now the only vendor to have TPC-A
results on four third-party databases. It is also the
largest TPC-A result in a host-based configuration.
Because 303 tpsA is large compared to other Series 800
results, it is important to position the result to
demonstrate HP 9000's ability to effectively offload
mainframe data center applications running ADABAS. For
discussing the Series 800 family's breadth and scalability,
the Informix or Oracle Model I50 result is more appropriate.
When making competitive comparisons use the Model I50 result
that most closely matches the database and configuration of
the competitor's TPC-A result.
Software AG worked closely with HP to tune ADABAS to excel
on HP 9000. ADABAS was reengineered to reduce context
switching, streamline the IPC mechanism, and make use of
hashed indices. The enhancements enable the high performance
achieved with ADABAS. Customers should not expect this
performance level with other databases.

Product Name and P/N: HP Series 6000 fast wide SCSI mass
storage systems and expansion kits, see text for P/Ns
Description: mass storage towers with new 1- and 2-GB fast
wide drives; replace HP Series 6000 Models 1350SX and 670SX
Target Market: HP Apollo 9000 Series 700 users who want
high-performance external storage
Features and Benefits
New Fast Wide Drives--The 1- and 2-GB, HP-designed-and-
manufactured SCSI-2 disk drives offer 10.5-and 11.5-ms
average seek and up to 20 MB/s channel transfer rate. This
channel transfer rate is four times as fast as single-ended
drives and twice as fast as the earlier fast narrow drives.
Fifteen disks per SCSI bus are supported, compared with
seven for earlier products.
Up to 7 GB of Disk Storage--This is an increase from the
4.6-GB maximum disk storage of previous storage systems.
New, Easy-to-Order, Preconfigured Storage Systems--Towers
are preconfigured with four 1-GB disks, two 2-GB disks, or
seven 1-GB disks.
Same Minitower Enclosures--Floor-standing minitower
enclosures house up to seven half-height devices.
HP Workstation Support--The new systems are fully tested and
supported on Series 700 with HP-UX 9.01.
Product Line Positioning
The new systems are faster and higher capacity than the
earlier differential systems (Models 670SX and 1350SX) they
replace. In dollars/MB they are equal to or less than the
earlier products. As the new products are also differential
and have double the number of data lines, they are termed
"fast wide."

product brief, P/N 5091-5181E, and the HP-internal sales

Tivoli System Management Software to Run on Series 700 and
800
Tivoli System Management Software to Run on Series 700 and
800
For the U.S. Only
Contact: Theresa Ek, 508 or Telnet 436-5091
Product Name: Tivoli Management Environment (TME); includes
Tivoli/Works, Tivoli/Courier, Tivoli/Sentry, and
Tivoli/Application Extension Facility (AEF)
HP Channel Partner: Tivoli Systems, Inc.
Description: one of the leading software products for UNIX
distributed systems management
Target Industry: horizontal; particularly
telecommunications, aerospace, financial/banking, insurance,
public utilities
Target Market: horizontal; systems management
Features and Benefits
TME simplifies and automates tasks such as user, host, and
group management and administration of security, remote
systems monitoring, and networkwide software distribution
and maintenance. TME includes the object-oriented Tivoli
Management Framework, graphical and command-line user
interfaces, and several management applications.
A core application and the basis for all other Tivoli
applications, Tivoli/Works manages basic system resources
including user accounts, host systems (workstations and
servers), and NIS directory services. It also simplifies
development, delegation, and enforcement of system
administration policies.
Tivoli/Courier lets system managers automatically distribute
software updates throughout a network and ensure consistent
networkwide software configuration. This eliminates the need
for updates on each machine. Tivoli/Sentry helps system
managers monitor, spot, and correct problems on local and
remote computers to reduce downtime. The Tivoli/AEF tool kit
lets system managers who do not have programming expertise
modify and customize Tivoli applications. Tivoli also offers
Tivoli/Advanced Development Environment, a tool kit that
lets independent and corporate software developers build
custom TME-based applications.
Tivoli applications use a point-and-click interface instead
of complex commands, which can improve productivity and
allow companies to take collaborative, team approaches to
systems management by distributing tasks among senior and
junior systems staff.
The combination of TME with the portfolio of HP OpenView
system and network management solutions gives customers one
of the industry's broadest choices of network and system
management solutions for distributed, multivendor computing
environments. TME and HP OpenView technologies constitute a
major portion of Open Software Foundation distributed
management environment (OSF/DME), a forthcoming industry
standard. The two products are complementary at the
framework level and provide a fast, easy path to DME. At the
application level the two products offer complementary and
overlapping functionality.
Ordering Information
The current version of TME, Release 1.5, is expected to be
available for customer shipments on HP systems in March
starting with HP Apollo 9000 Series 700, HP-UX 8.07. Release
1.5 (with Tivoli/Works/Courier/Sentry/AEF) will be available
on HP-UX 9.0 on both Series 700 and HP 9000 Series 800 later
this year. It will not be possible to manage a Series 800
system from a Series 700 using TME until TME is available on
both platforms. TME Release 2.0, which will provide
interoperability across HP-UX and Sun systems, will be
available for customer shipments for HP and Sun in third
quarter. Release 2.0 will include Kerberos management
capabilities, Tivoli/Application Development Environment,
and new and updated management applications.

Selling Points
Union Carbide needed a replacement for two aging IBM Model
3800, 135-ppm printers. The challenge was to provide a 20
million line/month printing solution that could serve the
needs of local HP systems and a remote mainframe.
With some HP printers already installed HP pitched the
advantages of standardizing on a single-vendor, desktop-to-
data center-compatible print solution and cost-effective HP
3000 print server networking to the remote IBM mainframe.
Union Carbide favored the ease of formatting electronic
forms overlays using software on the HP 3000 rather than the
mechanical forms-flash process required by the IBM 3800
printers.
Two Model F100 printers and an HP 3000 server were purchased
for the Danbury, Connecticut, office. Model F100
installations took less than half the time Union Carbide
expected based on experience with IBM printers. The solution
was running full production within a few weeks. Union
Carbide then decided to duplicate the installation in a
Charleston, West Virginia, mainframe data center.
